Kitzbühel (dpa) - The men's Alpine Ski World Cup races in Kitzbühel this coming weekend have been canceled due to the possible 17 cases of the British coronavirus mutation in nearby Jochberg.

Governor Günther Platter (ÖVP) announced this on Wednesday.

The decision was made in coordination with Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP).

After the cancellation of the Lauberhorn races in Wengen, Switzerland, Kitzbühel stepped in.

Two slalom runs should take place there on Saturday and Sunday.

The Hahnenkamm races from January 22nd to 24th are currently not in danger.

However, their execution depends on the result of the PCR tests in the entire Kitzbühel district, said Platter.

If there are no abnormalities, the downhill and super-G races on the Streif could take place as planned.

One day after 17 suspected cases of infections with the mutated coronavirus from Great Britain in Jochberg became known, no further suspected cases have so far occurred.

Platter said all of the 191 very targeted PCR tests were negative.

The trigger for the search was a course to train a ski instructor, in which mainly the British had taken part.

"Of course, such training is unnecessary," said Platter, showing little understanding for the event.
