At the press conference held that day, Diaric said that the 75th UN General Assembly President Bozker sent a letter to Guterres on the 8th, asking him whether he intends to be re-elected.

"The Secretary-General told him today (11th) that he would be re-elected if member states agree."

Dijaric said that Guterres has informed the heads of the UN Security Council and regional organizations of his decision.

"But at this stage, it is too early to judge how member states will react or guess whether there are other potential candidates."

According to the United Nations Charter, the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations must first be recommended by the Security Council and then appointed by the General Assembly.

The Security Council plays a key role in the selection of the Secretary-General. The five permanent members have the right to veto the Secretary-General.

The term of office of the Secretary-General is 5 years, renewable.

The spokesman of the UN General Assembly President Varma said at the press conference that day that the President of the UN General Assembly and the rotating presidency of the Security Council this month will discuss the selection process for the next secretary-general at a regular meeting on the 12th.

Guterres was born in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, on April 30, 1949.

In 1995, he led the Portuguese Socialist Party to win the general election and became Prime Minister of Portugal.

From June 2005 to December 2015, Guterres served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, responsible for leading and coordinating global refugee affairs.

In 2016, Guterres was elected as the 9th Secretary-General of the United Nations, with a term of office from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2021.
