The man was dehydrated and needed help, so the fishermen took him with them, gave him shorts, a beer and took him to Darwin, according to Kevin Joiner.

But once in hospital, he was arrested for failing to comply with his judicial review in an armed robbery case.

The man was sued in several cases

The two fishermen said they were amazed because the man told them he got lost while walking around the area.

"It was while going to visit him in the hospital that we discovered this," said Cam Faust.

Len Turner, a Northern Territory police official, confirmed to media that the man was being prosecuted in several cases.

"He is under arrest but is still at the Royal Darwin Hospital, where he is being treated for his self-inflicted ordeal," he told
