Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - According to the will of the SPD ministers, university places in Saxony-Anhalt are to be reserved for prospective medical officers in the future.

Health Minister Petra Grimm-Benne (SPD) told the German Press Agency that she wanted to win over the coalition to expand an existing program for country doctors.

Because in the health departments that are currently coordinating the management of the corona pandemic, there were no doctors.

Anyone who undertakes to take on this task after completing their studies could go through a special selection process to get one of the coveted medical courses in the country.

Last year, 21 places were already given to young doctors who have committed to work as country doctors for several years after graduating.

Grimm-Benne receives support from Minister of Science and party colleague Armin Willingmann (SPD).

The Ministry of Health is in charge of such a project, but he has great interest in introducing such a quota for public health officers, he told the dpa.

It is possible to enact a corresponding law before the state elections on June 6th.

Since the application deadline for medical studies runs until July 15, places could be reserved for prospective medical officers for the winter semester.

It is currently stipulated that the federal and state governments can reserve a maximum of one fifth of all medical study places for special purposes.

A large part of this contingent is already tied up in Saxony-Anhalt - for example for medical training for the Bundeswehr and for prospective country doctors.

However, ten places are free and could be used for the medical officer quota, said Willingmann.
