Eschweiler (dpa / lnw) - After nationwide investigations, the police in Aachen arrested a fraudster gang that was operating with a new scam.

Members of the gang approached seniors on the street and asked for an apartment key to allegedly repair a bag, police said on Monday.

During the procedure, however, the key was exchanged for a similar one.

While the victims continued walking with the wrong key, the gang went on a robbery in the homes of the senior citizens.

The gang was able to detect a total of 21 cases: ten in the Aachen area, ten in Baden-Württemberg and one in Düsseldorf.

After two scams with the scam in Eschweiler, the gang was arrested at their lounge in Düren near Aachen.

Covert measures also contributed to this, the police said.

The stolen goods were mainly jewelry and cash.

The investigation continues.
