Berlin (dpa) - According to the German Animal Welfare Association, the corona pandemic threatens to exacerbate the financial problems of many animal shelters.

The main reason for this is the loss of income due to the elimination of fundraising events.

"As far as we know, the animal shelters that are affiliated with us have to cope with about 60 million (euros) of reduced income," said the President of the Animal Welfare Association, Thomas Schröder, of "Welt am Sonntag".

The associations and 550 association-run animal shelters of the Animal Welfare Association in Germany are financed, unlike municipal institutions, primarily from membership fees and donations.

"Given the current situation, the sum is likely to be even larger, because even for spring 2021 it is foreseeable that there will be hardly any improvements," Schröder continues.

Even before the Corona crisis, around half of the animal shelters were fighting for their existence.

That the federal government wants to support the animal shelters and their sponsoring associations with a total of five million euros this year is an encouraging signal.

The sum will not be enough for the chronically underfunded animal shelters.
