Cologne (dpa) - The Catholic university community in Cologne has expressed itself “dismayed and stunned” about the ongoing conflict with the Archdiocese of Cologne.

"We find it unbelievable that you let us go to our private Christmas parties without giving any comments," wrote the pastoral advisor Martina Schäfer-Jacquemain to the Archdiocese.

A position paper critical of the church was removed from the website of the university community in November by the Archdiocese of Cologne.

The entire website was temporarily shut down - accidentally, as the Archdiocese emphasizes.

The university community, however, assumes that the shutdown was intentional.

In the position paper, the university community complained, among other things, of a growing gap between the church and the reality of young people's lives.

The employees of the university community had been threatened with labor law consequences, and this situation is still going on, said Schäfer-Jacquemain on Thursday.

"We live and work with these threatening scenarios with an immense psychological burden."

It is bad that this was not clarified even before Christmas.

The university community is calling for the labor law review to be discontinued, the position paper to be republished and their previous autonomy to be restored.

The archbishopric announced that the intensive and critical examination of church positions is fundamentally an important concern.

"Especially for students, there must be discussion rooms in which the open and lively, but above all the objective and balanced exchange of opinions takes place."

In principle, no information could be given on the content of employee interviews.
