Stralsund (dpa) - Unknown people smeared the Jewish memorial stele in Stralsund.

Between Tuesday and Thursday, an indeterminable black character was applied to the memorial, the police in the port city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania announced early Thursday morning.

In addition, the stele was probably kicked.

The memorial stele in the courtyard of the Johanniskloster was erected in 1988 near the former synagogue in Stralsund to commemorate the victims of the pogroms.

In December 1991, the memorial was smeared once and then moved for fear of further attacks.

After being temporarily stored in the zoo, it finally found its place in the courtyard of the monastery.
