Munich (dpa / lby) - The chairman of the Evangelical Church in Germany, Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, has spoken out against a general cancellation of face-to-face church services at Christmas to protect against corona infections.

"No, no general rejection recommendation," said Bedford-Strohm on Wednesday in the radio program "Bayern 2-radioWelt" of the Bavarian broadcasting company.

“That must now be decided on site,” he added.

"There is only a narrow corridor," emphasized Bedford-Strohm.

There are people for whom a live stream worship service is an ideal alternative.

But there are also lonely people who need a service on site, but "only under the strictest hygiene requirements."

There are good reasons to keep the opportunity open to hear the Christmas message in the churches this Christmas too.

“The greatest power of the Christmas message lies in the hope that it radiates to this day,” Bedford-Strohm told the “Passauer Neue Presse”.

“That is exactly what we need so urgently at the moment,” he emphasized.

«That we continue to live with the feeling that God is with us, that we are protected and that no virus in the world can separate us from him."

Bedford-Strohm made it clear that terminal care was necessary even in the corona crisis.

«It must be guaranteed that everyone is accompanied as they die.

Pastors and the next of kin must have access when people die, ”he told the newspaper.
