Schwerin / Hamburg / Kiel (dpa) - In the north church, many Christmas services have been canceled due to the corona pandemic.

This is regionally very different in the 13 church districts in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, said a church spokesman for the northern church of the German press agency.

About 90 percent of the presence church services over Christmas are canceled in the church districts of Dithmarschen and Rantzau-Münsterdorf.

In some districts there is still around half of the supply and in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania it is around two thirds of the supply.

The Protestant inner-city communities in Lübeck - there the seven-day incidence of new corona infections is over 200 per 100,000 inhabitants - have canceled all attendance services over Christmas until January 10th.

In addition to face-to-face worship services, the northern church is relying on digital offers on the Internet, television worship services and alternative formats, said the church spokesman.

The Northern Church has called on everyone to sing the most famous Christmas carol "Silent Night, Holy Night" together on Christmas Eve at 8 p.m. at the open window or balcony.

"Christmas is taking place", emphasized the church spokesman.
