Val d'Isère (dpa) - Ski racer Kira Weidle just missed a top ten finish on the first World Cup downhill run this winter in Val d'Isère, France.

The 24-year-old finished eleventh in the victory for Swiss Corinne Suter.

Weidle's deficit on the 2019 vice world champion and downhill World Cup winner last season was 1.45 seconds.

The Italian Sofia Goggia (+0.11) and the American Breezy Johnson (+0.20) finished second and third.

Weidle was the only German starter in the first women's speed competition this season, which was overshadowed by falls and interrupted several times.

The Austrian Nicole Schmidhofer, overall World Cup winner Federica Brignone from Italy, Joana Haehlen (Switzerland) and Alice McKennis (USA) all crashed into the safety fence in the same section of the route in which Weidle had already fallen during training.

Schmidhofer even broke the net and stayed behind.

She was taken to the valley by rescue sledge and then taken to a hospital.

According to initial information, she was conscious.
