Heidelberg (dpa / lsw) - The Heidelberg residents should be able to vote on the future location for the arrival center for refugees on April 11.

According to the city, the local council decided on Thursday evening.

This is a defeat for the alliance BAFF, which wanted to combine the referendum against the relocation of the center and the state elections.

BAFF stands for Alliance for Arrival Center, Refugees and Land Conservation.

With a joint appointment on March 14th, you will most likely reach the required quorum of 40 percent of the electorate for the referendum, argued the BAFF.

With around 10,000 signatures collected in a referendum, the alliance has already cleared the hurdle for approval.

The BAFF wants to prevent the relocation of the center in the former US settlement Patrick-Henry-Village (PHV) to an area previously used for agriculture called "Wolf Gardens".

There are ecological, financial and social reasons against the latter.

The city administration wants to avoid the simultaneous vote "due to the great local political relevance of the topic" and had proposed April 11th.

The city assumes that the decoupling will increase voter participation.

The reason: In a separate referendum, postal votes can also be used.

This solution would cost 250,000 euros more.

The city wants to create a new district on the PHV site.

The financier of the arrival center, the country, emphasizes that the PHV settlement was always intended as a temporary solution.

The "Wolf Gardens" are a suitable location.

The state is providing 100 million euros for the new building.
