Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - A new mayor will be elected in Karlsruhe today.

Six candidates are running, including the previous mayor Frank Mentrup (SPD).

The 56-year-old is also supported by the Greens.

There are also options: Sven Weigt (49) - the mayor of Karlsdorf-Neuthard (CDU) is also running for the FDP -, city councilor Petra Lorenz (53) for the free voters / for Karlsruhe, the AfD councilor Paul Schmidt (54), Vanessa Schulz (39) from “The Party” and the non-party registrar Marc Nehlig (26).

With 308,988 inhabitants (as of the end of July), the fan-shaped city of Karlsruhe is the third largest municipality in Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart and Mannheim.

The "Residenz des Rechts" is the seat of the Federal Constitutional Court, Federal Court of Justice and Federal Prosecutor's Office.

On December 6, 233,000 eligible voters have the floor.

If no winner emerges from the election, a new election is scheduled for December 20th.
