Colonel Malick Diaw, number two in the junta in Mali which ruled the country after the August 18 putsch, was elected on Saturday at the head of the National Transitional Council (CNT).
This council, which has 121 seats and brings together political parties, representatives of civil society, unions and the military, met in Bamako for its inaugural session.

To show that the stakes were settled even before his election, Colonel Malick Diaw already had in his pocket his speech as the new president of
the National Transitional Council (CNT)
.
Out of 118 voting members of the CNT, Colonel Malick Diaw obtained 111 votes.
He was the only candidate for the post of the institution.
The colonel pledged, in his speech, to work to reconcile the Malians as well as to meet the challenges of the country.
And between the security problems and the next elections, there are many.
The CNT will play the role of National Assembly during the transition period.
Its members
therefore have the status of deputy but were not elected.
They were named after the green light from the military.
End of the CNSP
The establishment of this legislative body also marks the end of the official existence of the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP), a body created by the junta after the coup d'état of August 18.
But the military, at least the five main coup plotters, did not return to the barracks.
They all have the important political posts.
