25 November 2020 "Breaking the chain of violence against women means fighting all forms of oppression, imposition and abuse".

Thus the President of the Republic on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women which is celebrated today.

"Gender-based violence is not expressed only in physical aggression, but includes psychological harassment, economic blackmail, threats, various forms of sexual violence, persecution and can even lead to femicide. At the base of all these forms. of violence there is the insane and unacceptable idea that the relationship between men and women should not be based on a mutual recognition of equality ".

The Head of State recalled that "today's anniversary leads us to reflect on a phenomenon that unfortunately does not stop being a public emergency. The news of violence against women still occupies our news too often, offering the image of a a society where respect for women is not part of people's daily actions, of private and public language, of interpersonal relationships. Gender-based violence is not expressed only in physical aggression, but includes psychological harassment, economic blackmail , threats, various forms of sexual violence, persecutions and can even lead to femicide. At the basis of all these forms of violence is the insane and unacceptable idea that the relationship between men and women should not be based on a mutual recognition of equality ".

Mattarella also notes that "in this dramatic moment for our country and for the whole world" it is women who have been particularly affected.

"The pandemic - he emphasizes in the message - has increased the risk of violence that often takes place within the home: unfortunately, during the lockdown period, there has been a dramatic increase in violence against women, which is tragically seen at times Institutions have taken up the cry of alarm launched by the women themselves and by the associations that have been committed for decades to eradicate what is, still in too many situations, a deeply rooted concept aimed at disavowing the freedom of women and their ability This is why it remains essential for women who feel threatened to turn to those who can offer support and prevent the degeneration of coexistence into violence. Breaking the chain of violence against women means fighting all forms of oppression, imposition and of abuse. In a democratic society, women should no longer be afraid of violence, at home, at work, in everyone

the places and contexts in which they believe they can realize their personality ".
