The emblematic Hontanares cafeteria-pastry shop, located on Avenida de América in Madrid,
has permanently closed its doors due to the losses generated by the coronavirus crisis.
Hontanares Avenida de América opened in 1966 and since then it had not closed any day of the year until last Monday, when the premises were closed forever,
through which some 1,600 people passed a day,
according to Telemadrid.
"Many of our clients were travelers from the rest of Spain, the occasional international tourist, and they no longer come to Madrid. Another large part were older people, regular locals, who are already afraid of coming to closed places. Then there are other people that he teleworks and no longer goes through here,
or he has no money because he is out of work or in an ERTE ", company sources have explained.
Until its closure, 19 people worked in the premises, although the establishment had reached up to 30 employees.
Hontanares thus joins the long list of historic establishments in Madrid that have been forced to close.
Some of the last to close its doors have been the Hard Rock in Plaza de Colón or the Zalacaín, the first Madrid restaurant to achieve three Michelin stars.
