- A Nobel Prize that rewards the work that Emmanuelle Charpentier has done at Umeå University makes us, of course, extremely proud, says Rector Hans Adolfsson and nods in agreement on the question of whether Wednesday's announcement is the biggest thing that has happened during the university's 54-year history.

The principal congratulated

At a press conference organized by Umeå University on Wednesday, Umeå University's Rector Hans Adolfsson had the opportunity to congratulate Nobel Laureate Emmanuelle Charpentier.

- This is an honor for everyone who knows you.

It's great that you finally get this award.

It feels so good for us in Umeå, Hans Adolfsson said directly to Charpentier.

Two honorary doctors have been awarded

Emmanuelle Charpentier is an honorary doctor at Umeå University and has previously been a guest researcher at the Umeå Center for Microbial Research.

Rector Hans Adolfsson emphasizes that Charpentier's work at Umeå University is about basic and fundamental research.

- Having the opportunity to do basic research is important for making breakthroughs that can later affect people in the future, says Adolfsson.

Wednesday's Nobel Prize is the second to be awarded an honorary doctorate at the University of Umeå.

In 2018, the Congolese chief surgeon Denis Mukwege was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

That for his work against sexual violence against women.

In 2010, Mukwege was appointed an honorary doctor at the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University.
