It is a highly symbolic bar that was officially crossed on Sunday.

Nine months after the detection of the new coronavirus in China, the world has passed the million deaths linked to the disease, according to an AFP count from official reports.

Importantly, the number of cases and deaths is very likely underestimated due to limited testing capacities or different census policies in different countries.

Over 33 million cases

In total, at least 33,018,877 cases have been officially recorded on five continents, resulting in 1,000,009 deaths.

Some 22,640,048 people are considered cured by the health authorities.

The regions most affected in terms of number of deaths are Latin America and the Caribbean (341,032 deaths for 9,190,683 cases), Europe (229,945; 5,273,943) and the United States and Canada (214,031; 7,258. 663).

Bad numbers from Peru and Belgium

At the country level, the United States leads in absolute death toll (204,724), followed by Brazil (141,741) and India (94,503).

Compared to the population, among the most affected countries, this number of deaths is highest in Peru (975 per million inhabitants), followed by Belgium (861), Bolivia (671) and Spain (668 ).

The crossing of the threshold of one million deaths from Covid-19 comes at a time when Europe, and to a lesser extent the Middle East and the United States, are facing an increase in detected cases (+ 20% in Europe in one week).

This raises fears of the arrival of a second deadly wave of contamination.

In Europe, the number of deaths recorded in one week increased by 11% last week (4,509 dead) compared to the previous one (4,056).
