According to figures from the Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics, the number of abortions reached a high for 30 years in 2019. An increase which is explained in particular by the rise in 'mistrust of contraceptives among women between 20 and 29 years old.

A record that dated back 30 years.

According to the latest figures released this week by the Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES), the number of abortions performed in 2019 reached its highest since 1990 with 232,200 procedures.

If for some this record is good news, since it reflects a certain ease of access to the voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) in France, others see the glass half empty.

20-29 year olds are the most affected by the use of abortion

If the number of abortions is on the rise, this may also be due to a decline in the use of contraception.

A marked trend among the most precarious women, but also among the 20-29 year olds who are the most concerned with an average of 27.9 abortions performed per 1,000 women.

"Every day there is a real distrust that grows vis-à-vis the idea of having a foreign body in your uterus, or of taking hormones", explains at the microphone of Europe 1 Philippe Deruelle, secretary general of the National College of French Gynecologists and Obstetricians.

However, if "these methods of contraception are not perfect, they avoid having unwanted babies and resorting to abortions," he recalls.

According to DREES, women in this age group particularly favor natural methods of contraception, which are much less effective.

A trend which therefore partly explains the record for the number of voluntary terminations of pregnancy performed in 2019.
