The Swedish Tax Agency is responsible for the new initiative, after receiving the assignment from the government this spring.

Together with a number of other authorities, strategic addresses that are suspected of systematic errors in the population register must be mapped out and investigated, and also persons and companies connected to the addresses.

This is to detect incorrect population registers, something that has been illegal since 1 July 2018.

False population registration is linked to welfare crimes

The hope is to access serious organized crime and welfare crime for which the incorrect population registers can be used.

- For a few years, we have led an effort within government cooperation, which will continue in parallel.

The experiences from it will be used, but the government assignment gives the work a whole new weight, says Anders Klaar, coordinator for the government assignment, in a press release.

The City of Gothenburg is one of two pilot municipalities

It is now clear that the Swedish Tax Agency will collaborate with the City of Gothenburg and Södertälje Municipality in the new project.

 - There are two municipalities that at an early stage showed special interest in participating in and developing the forms of cooperation to improve control.

Of course, we hope that new forms of cooperation that are developed will be able to be applied in more municipalities in the future, says Peter Sävje, head of the population registration department at the Swedish Tax Agency, in the press release.

Will be evaluated next autumn

The authorities that collaborate in the pilot project have now together participated in a start-up meeting.

The project's results will be reported to the government in just over a year.
