Today, representatives from the National Museum of History visited Öland to work with the County Administrative Board of Kalmar County, Kalmar County Museum, Linnaeus University, Ekerum Resort Öland and the municipalities of Borgholm, Mörbylånga and Kalmar to look further at the conditions for creating an Öland Historical Museum.

- It is really strange that there is not already a museum on Öland that can describe all the history that exists here, it should have existed a long time ago, says Peter Sandwall, governor of Kalmar County.

The plans for its own historical museum on Öland have existed for several years, but only now do the parties have a plan on how it could be implemented.

- This has been discussed for many years but it has not been agreed on how it should be done.

Now Ekerum resort has shown interest in building in connection with the expansion of their hotel, and it has united the parties in their plans, says Christina Karlberg, communications manager at the County Administrative Board in Kalmar County.

Öland rich in ancient finds

Öland is one of the areas in the country that is richest in ancient finds - and the idea is to be able to show them at home - instead of, as today, sending everything up to Stockholm.

- This is the first time you have a concrete meeting with the National History Museum, so there are no decisions and no decision will be made tomorrow either, but that there is interest from Stockholm is great in itself, says Christina Karlberg.

What are the plans?

- We are talking about building a real museum on Öland, not just a small stand.
