15 September 2020 Italy presses on Benghazi for the release of the two fishing boats seized a few days ago by order of the leader of Cyrenaica, General Khalifa Haftar.

Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio today heard the families of the crew of the fishing boats, the mayor of Mazara del Vallo and the shipowners, to whom he assured the government's maximum commitment to a positive resolution of the affair.

It is learned from diplomatic sources.

The pressing of the Farnesina, again according to what is learned, is relentless: yesterday Di Maio first heard from his Emirati counterpart and today he will hear the Russian minister Lavrov.

Both the Emirates and Moscow are two very influential actors towards Benghazi.

Di Maio also wanted to clarify the degree of complexity of the situation and of the times.

In this regard, he communicated to his family that a government summit on the issue will be convened, because "the action must be unanimous", explained the head of the Farnesina.

"Minister, thank you for your presence and availability, we greatly appreciate the effort that the Farnesina is making to release the fishing boats" seized in Libya.

According to what is learned, the mayor of Mazara del Vallo told Minister Di Maio during this morning's videoconference connection.

The boats 'Antarctica', with a crew of ten members, and 'Medinea', with six other people on board, are moored from the beginning of September in the port of Benghazi, a city controlled by the men of General Khalifa Haftar, who would have asked for the release of some Libyan smugglers detained in Italy in exchange for their release.
