The heir to the Spanish throne, Princess Leonor, will be subject to quarantine after one of her classmates tested positive for the emerging coronavirus.

A spokesperson for the royal palace said: “After discovering an infection with (Covid-19) in a student in the class of the Princess of Asturias, the Santa Maria de Los Rosales school in Madrid recommended that parents not attend this class for 14 days.”

The 14-year-old daughter of the King of Spain, Felipe VI, returned to school on Wednesday at a private institution in Madrid.

The spokesman added that she would conduct a laboratory examination (PCR) to verify whether she was infected with the virus, noting that the King and Queen "intend at the present time to continue their official activities."

Eight million Spanish children had returned to their classes last week, but some schools closed their doors, or some of their classes, after tests showed students were infected with "Covid-19".

And the beginning of the school year carried strict health measures, such as imposing the wearing of a muzzle for students at all times, starting from the age of six.

Spain is the first country in Europe this week to exceed the threshold of 500,000 HIV infections, and on Friday, it announced more than 12,000 additional infections compared to Thursday's outcome, which is a record since the beginning of the epidemic.
