The president of the agency responsible for promoting tourism in Ireland resigned on Saturday after revelations about his vacation spent in Italy despite calls to focus on domestic travel due to the coronavirus pandemic. In a statement, Tourism Minister Catherine Martin announced that she had accepted the resignation presented by Michael Cawley, president of the Failte Ireland agency, saying she was "disappointed" and considering her position "untenable".

The stay in Italy of this former executive of Ryanair had been revealed shortly before by the newspaper The Independent .

Avoid non-essential travel

"As a sign of solidarity with the sector and to help the country reopen schools safely, the government and my ministry in particular have encouraged people to spend their holidays in Ireland this year," said the minister. “Although Italy is on the green list, which means returning people do not have to limit their movements, the government has called on the population to avoid all non-essential travel. Many fellow citizens and residents followed this instruction, ”she continued.
