The United Kingdom announced, Thursday, August 13, the reinstatement of the quarantine for travelers from France but also from the Netherlands, Monaco, Malta, as well as Turks & Caicos and Aruba, due to the increase in Covid-19 contaminations in these countries.

The measure will come into effect on Saturday after 4 a.m. (3 a.m. GMT) and could cause a massive return of some 500,000 British tourists currently on holiday in France.

It is a "decision that we regret and which will lead to a reciprocal measure, hoping for a return to normal as soon as possible", reacted in the wake of the French Secretary for European Affairs Clément Beaune on his Twitter account.

According to the Directorate General of Health (DGS), the monitoring indicators for the Covid-19 epidemic in France "continue to deteriorate" with a number of new confirmed cases which "is increasing regularly".

The most bereaved country in Europe

The United Kingdom initially imposed a global quarantine on all visitors arriving on its territory but then exempted certain countries from this measure based on the incidence of the virus at home. But London had reintroduced the quarantine for travelers from Spain in late July, taking airlines and thousands of Britons vacationing in the country by surprise. The British government did the same last week for Andorra, Belgium and the Bahamas.

The United Kingdom is the most bereaved country in Europe by the pandemic with more than 41,000 deaths from Covid-19.
