Earlier this week, SVT Västerbotten reported that a new investigation brought to life the proposal to build a bridge over Kvarken. A bridge that is estimated to cost between 30 and 50 billion kronor.

"Would completely change transport options"

The investigation, made by two Finnish experts, believes that the benefit of a bridge would be great for, among other things, freight traffic. Time had been saved on not having to cross the border at Haparanda, or take the ferry which is more sensitive to bad weather and strikes.

Erik Bergkvist, Social Democrat MEP from Västerbotten, is positive about a bridge.

- This would completely change the transport options in northern Scandinavia, he says.

"At best finished in 20-30 years"

A new ferry is being built now and will be ready by spring 2021, but it would not compete with the bridge, says Erik Bergkvist (S).

- These are very long processes. In the best case, the bridge will be completed before the ferry is to retire, in about 20-30 years.

But not everyone is equally positive. Hear some people from Västerbotten in town what they think of a bridge to Finland, in the clip above.
