The 23-year-old man was sentenced Monday to six years in prison and expelled for serious murder after firing a fire at a hostel on Björkholmen in Karlskrona.

Defense lawyer Pia Lindström now appeals the verdict, reports BLT. The appeal states that the 23-year-old was very mentally ill and therefore did not intend to set fire to the property and risk the lives and health of others.

The convicted man wants to undergo a psychiatric examination and be given the opportunity for a different or milder sentence.

- The appeal shows that my client reproduced stories outside the court that have not appeared in court. Stories that I think justify a forensic psychiatric investigation, Pia Lindström tells the magazine.
