Perfectly unknown in politics, Grégory Doucet and Bruno Bernard embody a new wave of French ecology. - Konrad / Sipa

  • The Greens have largely imposed themselves Sunday evening during the second of the municipal elections in Lyon and in the metropolis.
  • Their peculiarity: being new to politics for most of the top candidates.
  • Do they leave with a disability? 20 Minutes interviewed two Lyonnais political scientists;

"Tonight, Greta Thunberg is elected." At the time of commenting on the results of the municipal elections in Lyon, the candidate RN Andrea Kotarac could not hide his bitterness, or refrain from tackling the new ecological generation, who, thanks to a record abstention, has all crushed Sunday evening between Rhône and Saône.

Grégory Doucet, who until then had no mandate or any political experience, seized the keys to the town hall, largely outdistancing his opponents Georges Képénékian, the former mayor of the city, and Yann Cucherat, dubbed by Gérard Collomb. In the metropolis of Lyon, Bruno Bernard, hardly more experienced on the political level, left only crumbs to the Republican François-Noël Buffet and to David Kimelfeld, the outgoing president.

The results in Lyon

An "unprecedented political offer"

“Ecological issues are of concern to citizens, as we can see, but in Lyon, it is above all the division that played. The Greens have been offered the city and the metropolis on a plateau, "carefully analyzes political scientist Daniel Navrot, for whom" the very low turnout shows a deep disinterest in the elections ". “The concern for the climate is increasing. And this speech was amplified by the lack of interest in other political parties, "he continues.

The victory of environmentalists, according to political scientist Romain Meltz, also reflects a rejection of the alliance formed between the teams of Gérard Collomb and the right. “In Lyon, except in the 2nd and 6th arrondissements, each time there were union lists, the candidates obtained fewer votes than the sum of the results recorded in the 1st round. We can interpret this as the fact that voters did not support the imposition of an alliance, "he says. But not only. "There was an unprecedented political offer, different from the traditional partisan offer, in which the urban young people identified," he said.

Army of novices

The ballot allowed new faces to emerge. Behind Grégory Doucet and Bruno Bernard, there are, of course, some elected officials experienced in the exercise such as Emeline Baume, Fanny Dubost or Jean-Charles Kohlhass. But there is above all an army of novices such as Valentin Lugenstrass, Nadine Goergel (35 years old) whose it was the first municipal campaign, or Camille Augey, 28-year-old wine negotiator, who defeated Baron Collomb in his own fiefdom.

"When we look at the lists elected in Lyon, we can see that the candidates have nothing to do with the environmental activists that we have known in the past, remarks Romain Meltz. They have a quiet connection to globalization, for example. They fly, also drive sometimes. Their attraction to ecology is something quite recent ”. He added: “These are people who have a professional career in the private sector, often linked to sustainable development, humanitarian work or the defense of rights. They don't have the same profile as traditional activists. ”

"In 2001, Gérard Collomb's teams were not very experienced either"

"Apart from a dozen people, the vast majority of candidates elected on Sunday are newcomers to the political scene, who will discover what the life of an elected official is," confirms Daniel Navrot. The only policy they have known comes from the associative milieu they have frequented. »Do they leave with a disability? "If the question is whether they are experienced, I would say: not enough," answers Daniel Navrot. But Gérard Collomb's teams were not either in 2001 ”. This did not prevent the elected official from being re-elected twice. “They will however be accompanied by a handful of elected officials, who have acquired experience in the regional councils for twenty years by being an actor or an observer. These people have learned a lot, ”he continues.

Finally for Daniel Navrot, the results, recorded Sunday evening, now show that “EELV has become a pivotal party, as the PS may have been a few years ago. Today, it is no longer a question of belonging to an executive. We have a party around which other parties will unite. "
