  • Accident: a commercial plane crashes in a residential area of Pakistan

The crash of an Airbus A320 in southern Pakistan in May, in which 97 people died, was due to the "negligence" of the pilots, who showed "overconfidence", and of the air traffic controllers , he said on Wednesday. the Minister of Aviation.

"There was negligence on both sides," said Ghulam Sarwar Khan, presenting a first report on the recent accident to parliament.

"The pilot ignored the instructions of the air traffic controllers, who for their part did not report the damage" that a first landing attempt had caused on the PIA airline plane, he explained.

Throughout the landing the pilot and co-pilot "were not focused and were talking about the coronavirus . " "Their families had been affected and were talking about it," Khan said, based on the contents of the plane's black boxes analyzed in France.

"When the pilot reached the landing point, the control tower told him 'they are too high, they must go down' . The pilot heard the message and said: 'I will manage' . And he spoke again about the coronavirus," said the minister. , lamenting an "overconfidence" and a lack of "concentration".

The plane attempted to land once, the engines touched the ground three times and had to regain altitude when it failed, according to the person in charge.

At that time, the control tower "should have informed the pilots that their engines had been damaged in the landing attempt and that fire had been seen coming out of the engines, but it did not," the minister continued. The plane eventually crashed in a residential area and 97 of the 99 people on board died.

A recording, which was authenticated after the accident by a PIA spokesperson, showed that the pilot had sent a desperate message to the control tower saying, "We have lost the engines . " Pakistan International Airlines' A320 was flying between Lahore and Karachi.
