Restoration of the fresco in tribute to Steve Maia Caniço, Monday, May 18, 2020. - F.Brenon / 20Minutes

It had been heavily vandalized in February. The fresco created in tribute to Steve Maia Caniço, this young man who died on June 21, 2019 on the island of Nantes after a very controversial police operation, is now restored. The work, located on a harbor wall, near the Banana Hangar, had been covered with a black substance and what looked like a Celtic cross.

Two independent artists worked four days on the site to recreate the fresco. The damage was such that we had to start from scratch by repainting the entire wall in white, they explain. Their reproduction work ends this Monday evening. The slogans "What is the police doing?" And "Justice for Steve" have been rewritten.

Fresco loaded with symbols

Created last July when Steve Maia Caniço was missing, the fresco became even more symbolic when the lifeless body of the young man was found in the Loire, on July 29.

Steve Maia Caniço had fallen into the river while participating in a techno evening as part of the Fête de la Musique. A muscular police intervention caused confusion at the precise moment when the victim disappeared. This intervention would have lacked discernment, according to a report of the General Inspectorate of Administration (IGA). Access to this part of the bank is closed today.
