(Fighting against New Coronary Pneumonia) The Canadian government approves the first New Coronavirus serum antibody detection technology

China News Agency, Toronto, May 13 (Reporter Yu Ruidong) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in Ottawa on May 13 local time that Health Canada has approved the first new coronavirus serum antibody detection technology.

Trudeau said the test technology is safe and approved to detect specific antibodies against the new coronavirus in an individual ’s blood. He said that this is a key step for the official new crown immunization working group.

In late April, the Canadian government announced that it would invest approximately $ 1.1 billion in medical research and vaccine research and development for new coronavirus. One of the measures is to set up a new crown immunization working group composed of multiple medical professionals.

The Canadian Ministry of Health said that serum antibody testing will help to better understand whether the infected person is immune to the virus, and in-depth research on it will also help to understand the relationship between antibody positive and prevention of reinfection.

Health authorities said that in the next two years, under the leadership of the New Crown Immunization Working Group, at least one million blood samples will be collected and tested in Canada, targeting the general population and health care workers, the elderly and other specific populations susceptible to viruses.

This time Canada approved the new coronavirus serum detection technology developed by the Italian multinational biotechnology company DiaSorin. The detection technology was awarded the European unified certification and the US Food and Drug Administration emergency use authorization in the middle and late April.

Canada ’s chief public health officer, Tan Yongshi, admitted on the 13th that humans currently have limited knowledge of the new coronavirus in immunology, and relevant research is still in the early stages. The Canadian government's approval of serum testing technology is a step that will help the country achieve wider testing. It will be used in conjunction with existing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing methods.

Canada has so far approved 18 new coronavirus-related detection technology equipment. In addition to this serum detection technology, the remaining 17 are nucleic acid detection technology equipment.

As of the evening of May 13, there were a total of 72,278 confirmed and suspected cases in Canada, 35,164 recovered, and 5,302 related deaths. (Finish)
