Rajiv Chandra Dey and Sonchita Rani Deb are both from Bangladesh, but Rajiv has lived in Sweden for over ten years. About a year ago they got married and Sonchita then got a residence permit in Sweden.

When the corona virus began to spread, Rajiv Chandra Dey went to Bangladesh to retrieve his wife. There they were stuck for over two months before the Foreign Ministry, the Foreign Ministry, finally arranged a flight for those who landed in Sweden last Sunday.

Must fly to Qatar

But despite the fact that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs arranged the flight and Sonchita Rani Deb has a residence permit, she was not allowed to enter the country, because she had never been here before. Now Rajiv Chandra Dey is forced to leave the airport while the wife has to stop at Arlanda and board the next plane back to Qatar, where they stopped on the way from Bangladesh.

- I just want my wife here with me, says Rajiv Chandra Dey.

Never been to Sweden

In almost exactly the same situation is Nishan Barua, who moved to Sweden from Bangladesh last year to study. He and his wife Haimonty Barua also have a residence permit, but she must not enter the country because she has never been here before. Now they haven't met since Sunday when they landed at Arlanda.

Neither Rajiv nor Nishan have left the airport since.

SVT has applied to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who need to check and investigate the matter with the embassy before they can comment.

The temporary entry ban does not apply to people with a residence permit. However, according to the Migration Board's website, persons who have recently been granted a residence permit in Sweden, but who have not yet traveled to the country, are normally not included in the exemptions from the entry ban.
