It is 11 p.m. when the patrol of Cédric, Guillaume and Christophe returns to Lille by car after a final check in the last tram for Roubaix. "Arrived at the entrance of Lille, we are alerted by a motorist who warns us that a young man is at the edge of a bridge spanning the ring road, ready to jump," says Cédric at 20 Minutes .
The haggard eyes, the feet joined
The three peacekeepers then went to the scene, the Erfurt bridge, behind the Crowne Plaza hotel. On the spot, they discover a teenager dressed in black, the haggard eyes looking at the vacuum and the joined feet, behind the parapet. “We tried to start a discussion, but it remained closed. It's complicated in these cases. We don't know what to do, ”explains Cédric.
A few minutes later, they manage to cross-check the identity of the suicidal. "Her parents had declared a disturbing disappearance in the afternoon," said the peacekeeper. A dialogue tries to settle down, but the young man is unwilling to speak.
An ordeal all the more difficult for Cédric since he already witnessed a suicide a few years ago when he worked in Seine-Saint-Denis. "A man had jumped from the 4th floor of a building, before my eyes," he recalls.
My colleague grabbed him by the belt
Monologues are setting up to give him a taste for life. Until Cédric and his colleagues change their strategy. "We started to tell him that he could cause a serious accident and kill people, maybe even children, by jumping on the road. It worked. Without saying a word, he came towards us, then, suddenly, started to run towards another bridge located on the other side of Lille Europe station. "
And this bridge overlooks a park. “We quickly understood that he always intended to jump. Fortunately, my colleague grabbed him by the belt as he stepped over the parapet and I arrived in time to tip the two onto the sidewalk. We momentarily handcuffed him to immobilize him. "
The young man, who lives near Lille train station, was taken care of by the firefighters who took him to the hospital. “We had a discussion with the frightened parents who did not understand his gesture, notes Cédric. Obviously, this is not related to containment. But he never wanted to talk to us. "
