A level never seen since the beginning of March. China announced this Sunday 97 new "imported cases" of contamination with the new coronavirus, that is to say due to people arriving from abroad
Only two additional local cases have been identified by the Ministry of Health. But what worries the authorities is a second epidemic wave brought by international travelers.
No new deaths
China closed its borders at the end of March to almost all foreigners. The new imported cases are therefore mainly the result of Chinese returning home. The health authorities of Shanghai reported Sunday the arrival by the same flight from Russia of 51 infected people, all Chinese. They are among the 97 new imported cases identified nationally.
The total number of infected people coming from abroad therefore now stands at 1,280 since the start of the count. However, the Ministry of Health did not report any new deaths due to Covid-19 on Sunday. It has now been 10 days since the daily number of additional deaths has been below five. The official balance sheet therefore stands at 82,052 people infected with the new coronavirus in the country since the start of the epidemic, and 3,339 dead.
Foreigners placed in quarantine
To reduce the influx of patients from abroad, China closed its borders at the end of March for an indefinite period to almost all foreigners. It has also drastically reduced international flights. Anyone entering the country is also subject to a quarantine of 14 days. A large number of foreigners still present in Beijing were surprised Sunday to find that the color of their "health code" had suddenly changed for a few hours from green (no problem) to orange (quarantine mandatory at home).
This QR code on smartphone, generated by an official mobile application of the town hall, is assigned according to travel in risk areas in particular. A “green” code is required to be able to enter certain buildings. Many codes were finally changed from orange to green in the afternoon, seeming to indicate that it was apparently a computer problem and not a deliberate desire by Beijing to quarantine foreigners from the city.
