Yesterday, the Russian Constitutional Court approved amendments proposed by President Vladimir Putin to the country's Basic Law, which allows him to remain in power for two additional terms after the end of his current term in 2024. The Constitutional Court published its decision on its website, in which it considered that the draft amendment is compatible with The Russian Constitution. The court added that it had sent the decision to the Kremlin.

The text is supposed to be finally approved in a "popular referendum" scheduled for April 22. Despite fears linked to the emerging epidemic of Corona, the referendum date has not been postponed.

The amendment allows Vladimir Putin to "whistle" the number of his presidential states and run for elections in 2024 and 2030, while the Russian constitution prohibits the president from ruling for more than two consecutive terms.
