A man was sentenced to one year in prison for trying to drown his ex-girlfriend's puppy in the United States. Aaron Davis, 36, was convicted of animal cruelty after three days of trial in December.

In July 2018, a passer-by saved an eight-month-old puppy, locked in an abandoned cage at rising tide in Sandy Hook Bay, New Jersey. The animal was renamed "River" and the police opened an investigation.

Prosecutor says "intolerable" act

On the same day, police officers equipped with cameras intervened in a home for a marital dispute and filmed a puppy similar to River. These images made it possible to go back to the author of the attempted drowning. "Abusing defenseless animals is even more despicable when the animal is used for revenge against its owner," said the Monmouth County prosecutor, denouncing an "intolerable" act.

The protection of animals, which occupy a central place in the lives of many Americans, is one of the few consensual subjects on the political scene. In November, Donald Trump signed a law condemning sentences of up to seven years in prison for broadcasting videos showing cruelty to animals.
