  • Three young men are on trial from Monday before the Assize Court of Ille-et-Vilaine for the murder of Erwan Monterrosa in December 2016 in Rennes.
  • Luca and Kylian, two childhood friends, had beaten and then slit the throats of the dealer to whom they owed money.
  • Helped by a third man, they had placed Erwan's body in a canister before throwing it in the Vilaine.

He was 18 years old, had just left his professional baccalaureate training and was trading shit to make some money. On the night of December 28 to 29, he was slit in a flat in Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, near Rennes. In mid-January, the lifeless body of Erwan Monterrosa was found in a floating container on the Vilaine. For two months, the investigators had tried to reconstruct the young man's itinerary and to understand what had happened that evening in December. They ended up arresting two adults and a minor who confessed to the facts while in police custody.

These three young men without stories will be tried from Monday before the Assize Court of Ille-et-Vilaine for assassination and concealment of bodies. Three young people the police had trouble suspecting at the time. In 2017, the director of the judicial police admitted "having had a doubt", despite the evidence which overwhelmed the three young men, "because they did not have the profile at all". Two DNA traces found on the can allowed the investigators to identify the perpetrators.

A debt of 3,000 euros

Originally from Bain-de-Bretagne, Kylian and Luca had welcomed Erwan to have 300 grams of cannabis delivered. A dispute had broken out over a debt contracted by Kylian, up to 3,000 euros. Then Erwan had been hit with a brass knuckles, before being slit by Luca, 17 at the time of the facts. "He will assume his actions as he always did," says his lawyer, Thierry Fillion. "He is waiting to know what sentence he will be given. But we will probably not be able to explain what happened in a square and rational way, ”warns his counsel.

On the dock, Luca will find Kylian, his best friend of the time, with whom Erwan was killed. He who was in class with the victim. And who had never been talked about before that December night. "I still can't understand what they did," says Elodie Brault. The lawyer assists Kylian since his police custody. “He's someone who is described as warm, protective. He has a huge sense of guilt. He can't live with what he did. ”

"It's a chain of bad decisions"

On Monday, the two former friends and one of their friends, whom they called to dispose of the body, will face Erwan's family who will be seated in the courtroom. A family obviously bruised since the tragedy and which awaits answers, explanations to start their mourning. "Kylian is unable to explain why they did this. But it was not a premeditated act, it was not an ambush ”, assures Me Brault.

The lawyer will try for five days to convince the jurors that it was not a (premeditated) assassination but a murder, for a silly story of debts of stupas. “It's a chain of bad decisions. These are two kids who were overwhelmed by what was happening and who wanted to hide their stupidity ”.

Helped by their friend, the two accused had cleaned up the crime scene and then placed the body in a container, before throwing it in the Vilaine. “They were afraid of the victim because he was their creditor. It is a balance of power that is being established in the drug scene, ”says lawyer Thierry Fillion. The two men with clean criminal records face life imprisonment.
