“Andre Peyroni, the last French veteran of the Normandy-Niemen air regiment, left on the night of December 10th. Sincere condolences on behalf of the Russian people, gratitude for his feat. Eternal memory to you, our French friend, ”the message says on Twitter.

On November 25, 1942, an agreement was signed between the USSR and France on the formation of the Normandy squadron on the Western Front. French aces fought in the Soviet Air Force until April 1945.

In July 1944, the squadron was named after the Neman River. The pilots of the Normandy-Neman air regiment made more than 5 thousand sorties and shot down 273 German aircraft. Four French pilots received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
