INTERVIEW

On Wednesday, the main French banks were pinned by a report of two NGOs on their colossal carbon footprint. According to Oxfam and Friends of the Earth, banks' investments in polluting companies contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. It is through their investment choices and not their daily activities that banks "pollute" by financing companies with coal mining projects, thermal power plants, oil drilling projects like Total or its foreign competitors.

The minister of ecological and solidarity Transition, Elisabeth Borne, reacts on Europe 1. "Banks have a great responsibility in the investments they make," she said. "Banks need to make commitments to direct their investments towards investments that support the ecological and energy transition."
