On the 25th of November, every year the violence directed at women and girls around the world is highlighted. It has been a recognized UN Day since 2000, but the day has been marked by women's rights organizations and activists since the 1980s.

The day is the start of an annual campaign against violence against women that lasts for 16 days worldwide: from today until December 10, which is the international day for human rights. This is to symbolize that violence against women is a violation of human rights.

According to UN Women, one in three women in the world is subjected to violence at some point during their lifetime.
