Mass protests began in Iraq on October 1 due to the worsening social situation in the country, increasing corruption in government and unemployment.

On October 3, a curfew was imposed in connection with the riots in Baghdad.

UN Secretary General António Guterres later called on the conflicting parties in Iraq for dialogue.
