Canadian and Swiss win Nobel Physics Prize 2019

2019-10-08T11:40:07.075Z

Canadian-American James Peebles, Swiss Michelle Mayor and Didier Coeloz have won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics for their contributions to understanding the evolution of the universe and the position of the Earth.

The Nobel committee said Peebles' research and his theoretical discoveries in cosmic physics provided a basis for understanding the history of the universe from the Big Bang to the present, while in 1995 the Swiss researchers discovered an extrasolar planet orbiting a sun-like star.

Peebles will receive half of the prize - totaling around 830,000 euros (9 million Swedish crowns) - and the Swiss share the second half.
