Spaniard Marc Marquez (Honda) on Sunday won the San Marino MotoGP Grand Prix ahead of Frenchman Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha-SRT) who led most of the race.

Marquez increases his lead at the world championship on the road to a 6th world title in the queen category. He also won his 77th victory in the three MotoGP categories (51), Moto2 (16) and Moto3 (10), surpassing the legendary Mike Hailwood.

He passed in the last lap Quartararo who had seized the head of the race in the second round.

Marquez now has a 93-point advantage over Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) in the world championship with only 6 races to go. The Italian driver could not do better than 6th Sunday.

The podium is completed by Spaniard Maverick Vinales (Yamaha) in pole position.

"It was a very tough race," said Fabio Quartararo, who recalled that twice in the last two races it was Marquez who was beaten on the line. "This is the first time I was fighting like that with Marquez," added the young Frenchman who is playing at 20 his first season in the premier class and has not yet won.

"In the end, I said to myself: + I try or not? + And I decided to go," said the Spanish champion after the finish. The next Grand Prix will take place next week at home, in Spain, in Aragon but mathematically he can not conquer a sixth title even in case of victory.

Local and veteran hero Valentino Rossi, seven-time world champion and living a few kilometers away from the Misano circuit, finished 4th in front of his compatriot Franco Morbidelli, Quartararo's teammate in the SRT team, the factory's satellite. Yamaha.
