by Celia Guimaraes February 26, 2019Not only gadgets in Barcelona. The Mobile WorId Congress remains the annual appointment of the world's leading telecommunications companies. And this year more than ever we talk about 5G - the ultra-fast networks of the future - and its derivatives: from the Chinese with the "Huawei case" to the opportunities for American and European companies that, thanks to 5G, aim to play a role by protagonists in the digital world where all objects will be connected.

Strategic alliances
Regulators and mobile operators are also moving, after auctions for the 5G frequencies (in Italy they exceeded 6.5 billion euros) interested in forging alliances to invest together and share networks and spectrum. It is precisely in this direction that the agreement between Vodafone Italia and Telecom Italia to share investments in the new generation network, also mobile, announced close to the opening of the Mwc.

A wise agreement, according to statements to the press by Commissioner Agcom Antonio Nicita, which serves to "encourage forms of network sharing and investment sharing", on which however Agcom and Antitrust will have to be expressed.

Suppliers at the gate
Infrastructure providers such as Ericsson in Italy are also ready to take the opportunity, which positively considers the agreement announced by Tim and Vodafone on investment sharing. In an interview with Sole 24 Ore, Federico Rigoni, the Swedish group's managing director in Italy, says that in the second half of the year the results of the tenders will begin to be seen. But, observes Rigoni, it is necessary to see "how to monetize 5G" because "after the operators have spent 6.5 billion euros for frequencies, after the important investments that will be made to build the network, we have to get out of money. In our opinion it is no longer possible to proceed with flat rates where everything is present '.

China and Europe
In the background remains the case of Huawei, a Chinese telecommunications giant very committed to developing infrastructure for 5G connections but much opposed by the American president Donald Trump. And the CEO of Vodafone Nick Read spoke of this in Barcelona: the US should share information with the European authorities.

Another Asian giant engaged in 5G is Zte, which from Barcelona announces the birth of the cyber security team in L'Aquila, a city where it is engaged with OpenFiber and Wind Tre for the creation of new generation network infrastructures.

A team of less than ten people, highly specialized and ready to answer every question from the Italian government on the safety of 5G networks, explains Hu Kun, president of Zte for Western Europe. However, underlines Kun, the Italian government "has not yet received any formal request" to address the issues of security and confidentiality of networks after the alarm raised by the United States on the reliability of Chinese technology. As for the times for the 5G available to consumers and businesses, Kun states: "We are ready, it depends on the government".

Experimentation in L'Aquila
The future of 5G opens up completely new scenarios, as Hu Kun explains: "A job that I can imagine is that for seismic monitoring which we are already spertimetando to L'Aquila. Obviously we are not able to anticipate an earthquake, but the 5G is able to react with a speed higher than the human one. Imagine a system that, in the same instant in which an important shock occurs, interrupts the supply of gas, water and electricity and opens all the emergency exits in less than a microsecond ".

Zte - together with Wind Tre and Open Fiber - made a 5G demo in Barcelona with a video call from Barcelona to L'Aquila, during the Mobile World Congress. They used two Zte Axon 10 Pro 5G smartphones with chips produced by American Qualcomm. It will be on the market - in Europe and in China - in mid-2019. But not yet in Italy.
