On July 19, Iranian IRGC forces detained a British tanker Stena Impero in the Strait of Hormuz in connection with its violation of international shipping regulations.

On July 4, Royal Marines of Britain detained the tanker Grace 1, owned by Iran, off the coast of Gibraltar, because the ship allegedly delivered oil to Syria.

Subsequently, the Iranian Defense Minister Amir Khatami called the detention of Iranian tanker by Britain "sea piracy". In turn, British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt said that if the situation with the tanker Stena Impero is not resolved in the near future, Tehran can expect serious consequences.
