On Good Friday, the Erfurt Zoopark celebrated a premiere in its 60-year history: Lions were born there for the first time.

The two babies and their mother Bastet are well, Zoopark director Sabine Merz said. Which gender the two little lions have, was initially unclear. "We have to look now, like the pee," Merz said. This one could distinguish females and males.

The carers wanted to leave the mother and her babies alone for the time being: If predators are disturbed with offspring, it could happen that the mothers eat up the children, said Merz.

For the firstborn of the two baby lions Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow took over the honorary sponsorship. Visitors will be able to see the puppies live in a few weeks. Until then, video images of the lions will be shown on monitors in the zoopark.
