Hundreds of policemen, firefighters and helpers were on duty to prepare the demolition of the dud in Regensburg. The 250-kilogram bomb was found during construction and found to be not transportable.
On the site near the port, houses were cleared and streets closed on Tuesday and night. About 4500 residents had to leave their homes. Since some of them refused to leave the danger area, the evacuation was delayed until late at night.
At 4:42 am Wednesday morning, a special robot triggered the detonation, the detonation was heard throughout the city. Meanwhile, the road closures were lifted to the immediate area around the bomb site.
