Burglars have stolen from Paris about 40 robes of former candidates of the Miss France elections. They broke into the headquarters of the Organizing Committee in Saint-Cloud during the night, said Geneviève de Fontenay, long-time organizer of the beauty contest.

According to her, it was mainly about wedding dresses. Among them was the figure-hugging robe in which Sonia Rolland was named the first native African to be Miss France in 2000.

The theft was a "heavy blow" to them, a "substantial part of the story" of the election was lost, said Fontenay. She also has her apartment in the building.

"Part of my life is gone, I'm sad," said the 86-year-old. Fontenay had run the beauty contest until 2010 for more than half a century.
