A day in Copenhagen ideally starts with the smell of cinnamon rolls. Small bakeries offer the delicacies everywhere in the city. However, it is most comfortable in Meyers Bageri in Jægersborggade, where the Canelsnurrer pile up between sweet-stuffed poppy seed buns and strong rye bread in the display. Just a few meters away, The Coffee Collective serves outstanding freshly roasted coffees.

Most roads in the Nørrebro district are not far away. The area northwest of the Copenhagen Lakes, with its mix of students, artists and immigrants, has for some years been the hip center of the city. At the cemetery Assistens Kirkegård you can take a leisurely stroll, in the cafes and shops between Blågårdsgade and Elmgade, time goes by as slowly as the espresso from the portafilter machines. Presumably it was places like these that prompted the travel guide "Lonely Planet" to declare the Danish capital the most exciting destination in 2019.

Before the account balance is too low or the caffeine level is too high, it goes on for further exploration on the bike. Because in no other way you can get to know Copenhagen so well. The bicycle is an integral part of everyday life and an important factor in the quality of life of the city. On wide roads you can reach every corner of the city safely and comfortably, without relying on the car or public transport.

Stylish design

Dronning Louises Bro will take you to the city center. At lunchtime, it is still easy to drive on the bridge, only in rush hour traffic, it is cuddly. Thousands of cyclists cross the lakes here on the handlebars, the people sit on benches on the sidewalks and watch the spectacle. Our way leads us across the city center and Christianshavn on the peninsula Refshaleøen.

In recent years, the Copenhageners have rediscovered this former industrial site in the harbor. In summer they sit with a drink on the jetty in front of the La Banchina, in winter with hot drinks inside in front of the large window front. Who is frozen through on the saddle, can ask at the bar for a sauna. A few meters further, reefing has established a large street food market with regular artistic events.

Copenhagen: All natural

Already from Refshaleøen the Amager Bakke can be spotted, a waste incineration plant with a 1500 meter long ski slope on the roof. It was designed by architect Bjarke Ingels, who has implemented numerous innovative projects in the city, such as the 8 House and the Superkilen Park, and has made a name for himself internationally. Back in the city, the harbor is lined with other spectacular buildings such as the Opera House by architect Henning Larsen, the Royal Danish Playhouse and the Royal Library.

In general, Danish design is currently very popular worldwide. Anyone who has set up in the last few years, will have noticed at the latest then. So why not go treasure hunting right at the source? In Copenhagen's city center, there are a variety of shops that offer everything from accessories to furniture in Scandinavian design. In the still life and in the Hay House it can be wonderfully rummaged.

Falafel instead of cinnamon

Hungry again after so much sightseeing? Then on to Kødbyen, in the Meatpacking District. Here, Café joins a burger shop at Michelin-Restaurant. A good coffee is available in the Prolog Coffee Bar. If you are looking for stronger drinks, head straight to the H15.

A large part of the gastronomy is, according to the history of the place, specialized in meat. But vegetarians eat well. If you like, you can ring in the night here or in the numerous bars, such as the Paté Paté in the neighboring Vesterbro district.

Or you can go back to the bike and Nørrebro for digestion. A few cycling minutes away is the Ravnsborggade with its numerous bars. Det Ny Scala, Bevar's or Kind of Blue - the choice of trendy yet cozy stores is great. There is also falafel in the bread for the nocturnal cravings on every corner. It's as much part of Copenhagen as the cinnamon ring in the morning.
