A 45-year-old quad driver died during a suspected illegal race on Autobahn 111 in Berlin-Reinickendorf. The man was traveling in the vehicle towards Stolpe with a 58-year-old companion on Saturday afternoon, the police said. He is said to have agreed to the race with a hand signal in the Tegel tunnel with a 26-year-old motorcyclist who was traveling in the same direction.

While accelerating, the companion slipped off the quad seat and was dragged along, it was said. As a result, the driver lost control of the vehicle, left the road and crashed into the central barrier. According to the information, the driver was so seriously injured that he died at the scene of the accident.

According to police, the woman had to undergo emergency surgery in hospital because of serious injuries. The motorcyclist remained uninjured. The arriving emergency services confiscated both vehicles. The accident site in the direction of Stolpe remained closed until early Sunday morning.
